Connaissez-vous Matteo Ricci, symbole de la rencontre intellectuelle entre la Chine et l’Occident ? Brillant intellectuel jésuite, il arrive en Chine à la fin du XVIe siècle.
Invité par l’empereur en personne à séjourner à Pékin, il y échange à profusion avec les intellectuels chinois : science, sagesse, confucianisme, le tout dans un parfait chinois. C’est lui qui, le premier, aura le mieux exprimé la chance pour le christianisme de se confronter au confucianisme afin de se connaître davantage et de révéler la profonde universalité de la foi chrétienne. L’introduction de son procès en béatification éclaire d’une lumière nouvelle l’un des missionnaires jésuites les plus célèbres.
Lapréface de ce livre est écrite par le P. Benoît Vermander sj, sinologue et politologue, professeur de sciences religieuses à la faculté de philosophie de l’université Fudan, à Shanghai, où il est également directeur scientifique du « Centre Matteo-Ricci – Xu Guangqi sur le dialogue ». Il est également membre du Conseil Pontifical pour le Dialogue interreligieux.
L’auteur
Le P. Thierry Meynard sj est titulaire d’un doctorat de philosophie à Beijing et est enseignant dans une université chinoise (Guangzhou). Il a notamment publié, en 2013, une traduction en français, avec commentaire, d’une des œuvres majeures de Matteo Ricci : Sens réel de Seigneur du Ciel (Belles Lettres, Bibliothèque chinoise).
